Planning the interior of smaller rooms is a stumbling block for many homeowners. Very often in urban apartments, we have a very modest-sized room for bedroom arrangement. But it is not enough to put just the bed in the room for sleep, we need storage systems, dressing a table or even a workplace.
But there is always a way. We have tried to collect examples of inspirational bedroom designs with very modest sizes for all owners of modest residential areas. Options for interiors in different stylistic directions, color palettes, functional fullness and combinations with other residential segments.
Modern technology comes to the rescue of those wishing to save space – a TV can be hung on the wall, occupying the space no greater than a picture, attached to the ceiling with the help of brackets. To organize a study in the bedroom – just install a small console with a compact armchair or a chair and put your laptop on.
Let us consider the techniques that are used by the designers for arranging small rooms for sleeping.
Smaller room – brighter finish
We all understand that small space needs visual extension using finishes in bright or even white colors. But in order to avoid a bedroom reminding of a white sterile chamber, you must use at least a couple of accents made in contrasting or brighter colors.
Accent spots on the background of a light color scheme of almost all surfaces of the room can include decorations, textiles or certain pieces of furniture.
The flooring of warm, wooden shades can be a great distinctive element of the finishing.
With bright, contrasting elements, you can create a really interesting and non-trivial design of a bedroom, even on a completely white wall.
When the room is so small that it can barely accommodate a double bed, a headboard not only diluting the light finish but also giving the bedroom a personality considering its unusual design, can become an accent element.
A work of art on the wall or mirror in an unusual frame can become a bright accent. They take up a little space and can add beauty and elegance to the interior.
In this tiny bedroom, despite space saving, it was possible to use a non-traditional way to arrange the bed – in small bedrooms it is usually put against the wall. By setting the bed diagonally, we lose some space, but thus we can approach the bed from all sides. An interesting design of the bed headboard combines perfectly with the chest of drawers and picture frame.
If the room dimensions allow you to place a storage system, it is best to choose a built-in cabinet, which will save precious centimeters and will look stylish, practical and presentable.
The light room decoration of surfaces needs not necessarily to involve the use of white shades. Pastel, gray colors are perfectly combined with wood furniture, and the white color itself has a wide range of shades, from milk to pure white.
Even minor displays of color look advantageously against the background of a light finish, and a contrasting, geometric drawing or painting on the walls will certainly become the center of attention.
In small rooms, every centimeter counts, so you need to approach rationally to the arrangement of possible storage systems. Even a small piece of space can serve for the benefit of residents, transforming into a small rack, cabinet, or at least a shelf.
If the walls of a small room are decorated with moldings, it is best to use the same color as is the main surface. This visual effect will not focus on the size but will contribute to the creation of a bohemian environment.
This small asymmetric bedroom with sloping ceiling has become a haven for two beds at one time. Thanks to the bright interior design, the room does not look overloaded.
And this bedroom in rustic style is an example of how you can reflect the basic principles of a stylistic direction and create a cozy, relaxing interior in a small room.
Another example of a clearly defined style in a bedroom, this time the sea style. Several decorative elements and a typical combination of white and blue colors allowed creating an unusual image of the room, catchy and bright.
Bright interior in a small room – a creative practicality
According to surveys, which were recently carried out by a well-known European Designers Association, nearly half of homeowners would not agree on a completely light finishing even for a small room inside their own homes. In addition to using white color for the surface design of small rooms, there is a number of design techniques, visually pushing the walls and raising the ceiling. Among these methods is the use of a mirror, glossy and glass surfaces, and built-in furniture “suspended” without support structures, avoiding of blind screens and doors, 3D textures and colorful prints for walls.
Transparent glass doors of the built-in wardrobe seem to extend the room without cutting it. Accent wall, decorated in blue, gives freshness and brightness of the interior of this very small bedroom.
Who said that red can not be used in a bedroom? The range of shades is so great that it would be easy to choose the option not irritating its occupants before going to sleep and when awakening in the morning. A deep light burgundy color blends with a beige tone of curtains and carpeting, creating a truly original, memorable image of the bedroom.
If you decorate the accent wall in the light interior of a bedroom – its image will be refreshed at once. The dark chocolate color of the surface became the perfect backdrop for the soft light green bed headboard. And textiles of the same colors complete the harmonious atmosphere of the room for rest and sleep.
In this bright and colorful bedroom, white color was used exclusively for the bed, and the walls and textiles are decorated in rich colors, perfectly combined with each other.
If earlier anyone thought that small room walls painting in a very dark color can be called just a design failure, these bedrooms destroy all these stereotypes. With extensive natural lighting and artificial light systems, a snow-white finish of the surfaces or furniture – everything is possible.
Contrasting techniques always help to dilute the neutral palette of the room, give the room character a personality, some enthusiasm, optimism.
Study in a small bedroom – a reality
Currently, finding a small piece of space for console and chairs is enough for creating a workplace or a place for creativity in a bedroom.
A surface of the sill, prolonged and reinforced with wood top, can become this space.
The working surface of such mini study can be arranged in the form of a counter, such a structure takes up even less space, because it is attached to the wall and does not require vertical supports.
Not the least important aspect of the bedroom’s design in a small area is its lighting system. Recessed luminaires will save a certain amount of space. Classic pendant chandelier for bedroom will be appropriate with sufficient height of the ceilings only. Among other things, it is necessary to consider the lighting in the working area, whether it will be a table lamp or an adjustable wall lamp – it’s for residents to decide.
In this small room, combining the bedroom and study functions, an interesting design course was applied – the bed is placed on a podium with lights, in which the working surface and bedside table are integrated. The result is the effect of a bed hanging in the air.
The interior of this small bedrooms could accommodate not only the desktop but also the bookshelves, having used the provided square meters efficiently and ergonomically.
The problem with the lack of space in this room was solved using minimalistic principles in the bedroom design. A small bed, no decor, modest, an ascetic atmosphere was complemented by a light finish.
When the sleeping area, which is also a study, is arranged for a girl, the working surface can be used as a dressing table.
A print, which could be repeated in textiles for the bed, was applied for the decoration of vertical surfaces of the bedroom, the room harmony was complemented with a blanket of geometric colors to match.
Bedroom behind the screen or how to arrange two zones in a single room
A widespread layout in new buildings is a studio apartment, in which you need to equip all segments needed for a comfortable living. Sometimes, family extension requires separation of the available living space into zones. In this case, often screens and partitions of different configurations come to the rescue. These can be clear or frosted glass screens, shelves with closed or open shelves, and sometimes curtains.
In this case, we have an example of an arrangement of the living room and bedroom in one room. The wall for the living area is a storage system for the sleeping segment. The uniform color palette in both areas creates a harmonious atmosphere of the entire room.
This bedroom is separated from the living room with a dark curtain, which, if necessary, closes the entire opening to the recreation area.
This bedroom is separated from the living area by a system of sliding glass doors. The same matte material was used for doors of a built in the case in the sleeping room.
In this case, separation into zones – working and sleeping areas, is present in the bedroom itself. A space for a study was separated with shelves.
Bedroom in the loft style contains a partition at the bed headboard, which separates the bathroom space. Separation of space is characteristic of the loft style and is not the only characteristic element of the direction – brick walls, wooden finish, space and factory scale also point to the post-industrial interior.
We can not say that the bed in this bedroom is behind the screen, but it is essentially a closet, at least in its assembled state, when the room is transformed into a study.
Children’s bedroom – interior features
Of course, children like small spaces, but the problem in arranging a bedroom for a child is that a small bed is not enough, you will need storage systems for clothes and toys, maybe a chair or small sofa for parents or babysitter. Often, in a city apartment, it is not possible to arrange a child’s bedroom and a separate room for play and learning. Therefore, it is important to take the availability of all the segments necessary for the child within a small space into account and to consider color and texture preferences of the smallest resident.
All children love bright saturated colors and their presence is important to be taken into account even in a small room literally begging to be decorated in bright, pastel colors. But for children, it is important that the bedroom was not only practical but also interesting, fun and attractive.
The contrasting interior is a children’s area. Our vision needs focuses of attention, bright objects and change of tones, and this principle is working for a child’s body with redoubled force.
If the bedroom is designed for two children or teenagers, use of a bunk bed can be a great way to save space. The lower level can be used as a sofa, with a monitor or TV mounted on the wall in front of it.
