The colonial style dates back to the early 17th century, it appeared under the influence of immigrants` culture, who moved to North America from Europe countries.
The heart of style comprises functionality in everything and no unnecessary parts. Due to the fact that its founders were immigrants, special aspects of their way of life left a certain mark on the architecture of the buildings of that time. Typical colonist`s dwelling was a farm, set in a vast area where it was enough space for all members of his large family.
Buildings in the American style are easily recognized by such distinctive features as:
horizontal way of arrangement;
no high foundations;
roof, having an asymmetrical look;
two entrances: front and additional ones (usually facing a terrace);
many windows, often decorated with shutters;
a garage on the ground floor;
external galleries, able to protect from the fierce winds and heavy rains;
plenty of dormer and squint windows.
Let`s dwell on some interesting moments
Due to the fact that houses, built in the American style, have a low foundation, there is no need for high steps at the entrance. Herein the auxiliary rooms (such as a cellar) are projected at the considerable depth. The typical American porch looks like a platform protected by a canopy.
Roofs of American buildings are very original. Trying to distinguish themselves, American homeowners pay close attention to this element. In most cases, country residents prefer mansard types of the roof, since the space of the attic allows to implement many design ideas. Moreover, it is always possible to arrange a store room in the attic. One can see high or pointed roofs very seldom.
Houses, built in the American style, give the feeling of spaciousness. Americans like when the house is surrounded by greenery.
Color scale of such houses inclines to the calm life in the family circle: in most cases, pastel colors are used. You will not find here that architectural extravagance, which the buildings in the Rococo or Baroque styles abound with. Here everything is maximally practical.
While constructing American houses those materials were originally used that were easy to find in the area of construction, i.e., natural wood, stone or sandstone. Modern builders tend to completely hide from everyone the texture of the material used in the construction of the building. It is accepted to parget, paint and hermetically sew everything. Most often, you can see the buildings covered with painted clapboard or upholstered with a vinyl siding of different colors. Such surfaces are easily washed and painted.
The interior of the buildings in American style is simple and practical, and what is most important—it does not require excessive material costs. Due to the imitation of expensive materials and masterly chosen color combinations an effect of naturalism is reached. One will not see complex architectural forms here—niches, arches, and ledges are used. Curiously, in the interior of American houses, there are no sharp angles, as childcare for their owners is first and foremost.
Buildings in such style have a special planning, which provides separate rooms for all family members. The kitchen is large. Most often, it is connected to the living room and is known as a family room. There must be a family dining table and a modern TV.
According to the existing tradition, the bedroom for adults is located on the first floor of the building. In addition to the garage with access to the workshop, the ground floor often has the platform for fitness and sports equipment. Above there are rooms for the younger members of the family and sanitary conveniences.
Every American is very scrupulous about the design of the area near his house. From the facade side of the building, there are blooming flower gardens and bright green lawns. Rounding the building, one can see the sitting area with garden furniture, barbecue, and a playground for children’s games. Undoubtedly, the interior of the house, planned in the American style, is really created for happy and comfortable life among the numerous family members.
