Criteria for kids couch selection
A couch in a kids room may have several functional roles – part of the playing area, a place for rest and sleeping segment. Of course, the highest requirements will apply to a sofa with a pull mechanism that is able to quickly transform from a place to relax and play into sleeping area. If the children’s room can not accommodate a bed with orthopedic mattress and purchase of a folding couch is an urgent need, you should approach this issue seriously. We spend a third of our lives sleeping, and the children grow, develop, process the information they received during the day in their sleep. Kids health condition depends on how ergonomic, safe and comfortable the bed will be.
The quality of the furnishing materials for a children’s room is not only directly linked to the health of your child, but also reflects the lifespan of the product because a sofa is not a purchase made for one year use. It is better to invest once in a high-quality product and have no worries about the possibility of mechanism breakage, filler subsidence or upholstery ruptures.
Choosing a couch for a kids room is different from choosing a common piece of furniture, for example, for the living room, in the increased attention to risk areas. Try to ensure that the sofa design had as little possible reasons for injuries as possible – soft armrests, no protruding parts, and sharp corners. If the bottom of the sofa has pull-out storage systems, it is necessary to check that it has the so-called “fingers protection.” If the couch has a withdrawable folding mechanism transforming it into a bed, it is important to check the model for rubberized wheels, which won’t harm the floor covering in daily use.
A particularly close attention is paid to a child’s pull-out couch when folded it must be fairly compact, so as not to take up a lot of useful room space, and when unfolded represent a perfectly smooth (as possible) space for comfortable sleep.
The most popular are the transformer sofas. During the day, this piece of furniture is more like a roomy seat for two, and at night it unfolds in a rather spacious place to sleep. Typically, these transformers are equipped with bumpers on both sides to protect the child from falling. There are many models that can “grow” with your child.
When folding these models the lower part of the structure on the floor is not involved, so you will not need to worry about the floor covering condition with frequent use of the sofa as a bed. Almost all models provide sufficient space for storing bedding and other necessary attributes for sleep and rest.
Modern manufacturers of furniture for children’s rooms offer a wide range of orthopedic couches. Such models are more like beds (of various sizes) equipped with low backs or bumpers (around the perimeter or only on one side). If you place lots of cushions on the hardback of this piece of furniture, then we can get a kind of sofa.
If we talk about the choice of couch upholstery, the children, as a rule, have just one requirement – it should be bright and pleasant to touch. Parents are more worried about the environmental friendliness of the material, in particular, this applies to the choice of furniture for a child with allergies. Unfortunately, there is no material for the sofa upholstery, which is completely natural and at the same time easy to clean from dirt – spilled juice, paints, markers, modeling clay, etc. So every parent will have to decide the dilemma of choosing between the simplicity of cleaning and safety and comfort of the child for themselves.
For many parents, purchase of a sofa with a removable cover is a solution. Typically, these models are equipped with cotton covers that can be washed in the washing machine. The fabric is harmless for the child, and at the same time, it can be represented in a variety of color options.
A large sofa which can easily become part of the living room is often installed in a kids room. In the room of a newborn baby, this piece of furniture can become a necessity and serve a sleeping place for a parent carrying their “watch” at the cradle of the baby. In the room of a grown child, this couch can serve as a resting place during visits of friends and become a refuge for the night for late guests. If the space of the room permits installation of a sofa of conventional size (and perhaps design) may be more than justified, especially if there are several children living in one room.
Location for the couch
Very often, in order to save usable space of the children’s room, parents decide to install a loft bed. There is enough space at the bottom of this design solution for the arrangement of a small settee. Some decide to place a workplace on the lower tier, but it is obvious that such a space lacks enough natural light and the child will always have to use a table lamp. For relaxing on the couch, general room lighting would be sufficient.
Depending on the size of the loft bed and, accordingly, the space under it, you can arrange two small settees facing each other. The bottom of such constructions can be equipped with storage systems, which are always useful.
Arranging a sofa against one wall of the room is the most common option for a layout. It is obvious that the main purpose of distribution of furniture in the child’s room is freeing of the maximum space for games, sports and creativity. The task is complicated when two or three children live in one room. In this case, a bunk bed can be supplemented by a sofa with a pull-out mechanism, which will serve as a sleeping place for one of the children.
If the child has a TV in the room, then the couch is generally located near one of the walls and in front of the video area. The optimal distance is 2.5-3 m from the TV to the sitting place. Most often, children’s sofas are not high to ensure safety (so that the child could fall from a low height). This fact must be taken into account when arranging the TV and the child, sitting on a low couch, wouldn’t have to lift up their head to watch cartoons.
If in an adult’s bedroom, we set a small ottoman at the foot of the bed, in the kid’s room its place can be taken by a compact sofa. Having sat down on such a sofa, the child can dress conveniently.
Sofas for children’s rooms are so low that they can be installed even by the walls with window openings – the design will not interfere with the spread of natural light. Such a layout can be useful for small spaces with a deficit of usable space but don’t pull the sofa close to the heating radiator.
In a spacious kids room, the sofa can zone space and separate segments for game and rest. In this case, it should not necessarily be located against the wall. Such planning can be successful when using a conventional model and a corner sofa.
A wide range of models
Nowadays the range of furniture for children’s rooms is so wide that both parents and future little owners of the sofa can feel confused. If you allow your child to choose upholstered furniture for their own room, it is likely that they will choose a bright model with a colorful print or stylized as a fairy-tale hero, little animal, or a form of transport. But for parents, quality of the materials (which is most often lower in sofas resembling large soft toys) and the model dimensions, which should fit in the space area, and also meet the requirements of ergonomics and ease of use, are much more important.
Many parents like frameless models of sofas and armchairs, made in modular version. Fewer frame elements (or their absence) – fewer causes for failure. But it is obvious that these pieces of furniture are suitable for seating only, you can not sleep on them. A sofa made up of several units provides the greatest possible number of seats and will take up little space in the room.
You can make a sofa, or rather its original analog, yourself – put a soft substrate on the console, standing on legs, and provide the “backrest” softness with a few pillows. Of course, this sofa is not a bed, but you can arrange shelves or cells for storage of toys, books and sports equipment at the bottom.
If the kid’s room space and budget for arrangement permit, it is possible to realize even the most original ways to create a soft recreation and gaming zone. It is hardly possible to call the following units “sofas”, but one thing is clear – children will be delighted with these soft cells, where you can retire, but stay within earshot and sight of other children or adults.
The role of the sofa can be performed by a large puff of any shape, set against the wall and equipped with soft panels. This sofa can become not only a favorite hiding place for your kid but also a highlight of the interior raising the level of its uniqueness.
