In any bedroom, the bed is not only the main piece of furniture but also the coordination center of space. The whole design concept of the room for sleep and rest is built around the bed. Interior space largely depends on how the bed will look like and our well-being, sleep quality, and hence the state of health directly depends on how it is fulfilling its functionality.
Given that a third of our lives we spend in sleep, the choice of the main time to ensure a sound and deep sleep should be taken seriously. You will be able to save on other items of furniture, decor and even furnishing of the room, but you need a good bed for a good rest. Let’s talk more about what the criteria for choosing a bed are.
Bed design – special aspects of choosing
Speaking simply, the bed structure consists of a bed frame and a base on which the mattress is installed. Conventionally, all existing frames can be divided into two types:
- The frame consists of two supporting backs and two underframes (panels)
- The frame consists of four underframes mounted backs. There can be several such backs or only one (headboard)
If the bed is constructed according to the second type frame, then, as a rule, it is situated on four legs (sometimes in wheels, side walls, additional structures such as podium or platform).
Which option to prefer is your cause. In fact, the bed design features are not so important, as a manufacturer, material and workmanship integrity are. If we talk about the statistics, the legs break more often than backs, but this is not an absolute.
In addition to structure, the material from which the bed frame is made is of great importance. Beds made of metal and solid wood are the most reliable and durable.
Beds made from MDF and hardboard are shown to be less reliable. The most common problems with such structures -are cracks in the attachment point, because of which the furniture is loosened and begins to creak. If the bed frame is made from chipboard, similar troubles in operation will manifest even earlier. Beds made from chipboard are the cheapest, but such furniture won’t serve long.
Bed frame is responsible for the solidity of the supporting structure, but the quality of your sleep will depend directly on the choice of the base and the mattress. The base can be called a frame or lattice, which is attached to the frame of a bed and is a mattress support (the choice of which is a topic of a separate publication). Bed frame can be made from metal, wood or chipboard. Bars which are made of wood or plastic – these construction elements must bend – are installed to the frame. The structure should have as many bars as possible since the service life of the bed depends on their quantity. The distance between the bars must not exceed the width of the slats themselves. A number of bars equal to 30 are considered normal for a double bed (however, the more the better) and two times less for a single bed.
Among the special aspects of bed structure, an existence of models with lifting base (gas lift mechanism) should also be noted. Smoothly rising, the base provides access to a spacious storage system, created by the frame of the bed. You can store seasonal blankets or extra bed linen in a large drawer. However, such mechanisms have disadvantages – the base of the bed, in this case, is not ventilated, and therefore the lower part of the mattress is deprived of air.
Similar problems with ventilation arise in beds with drawers, placed in the bottom of the bed structure. Choosing a bed with lifting gear or drawers makes sense only in the case of a real lack of storage space. Otherwise, it is better to opt out of more storage systems in favor of a much larger life of your mattress.
Beds without headboards are uncommon in modern interiors, because it is quite uncomfortable without this important attribute. An exception is an option when the bed is set against the wall, which is decorated with soft textile panels.
Headboard acts not only as a support for the person resting on the bed, but also provides relaxation. This bed element is essential for those who like reading before going to sleep or watching TV. From the perspective of Feng Shui, the headboard is necessary for a sense of security for those who are lying in bed or reading a book in a reclining posture. This attribute of the central piece of furniture of any bedroom gives a sense of calmness and security.
Wrought iron and rack headboards are not comfortable enough for those who like to read before going to bed, but an extra set of flat pillows will help to solve this problem.
Choosing a bed for the soul and for the interior of the room
Beds with soft upholstery
The current trend in the design of beds suggests that this is not just a piece of furniture for sleep and rest, but also a beautiful, practical and at the same time the safe object of your furniture. Beds with soft upholstery became popular precisely because of all these qualities.
Not only families with young children who run to the parents’ bedroom, hitting all the corners on the way, got to like these pieces of furniture. A bed with an upholstery around the perimeter looks presentable as if it invites the owner to plunge into the soft embrace of sleep and rest.
For children’s bedrooms and teens’ rooms a soft bed is not just a safe piece of furniture, but also an interior decoration, a bright upholstery of the bed can become a focus in the design, putting this already important element of furniture to the foreground.
Typically, PPU filler is hidden under the upholstery of the bed – it is harmless and hypoallergenic. A puff upholstery of a double bed attached will give the piece of furniture a more luxurious look, and also will transform the entire bedroom design, making it more impressive, respectable.
Wrought iron beds in a modern interior
Nowadays, it is hard to tell precisely when the first forged products appeared. Despite the abundance of materials for the manufacture of furniture, beds made of metal are popular even today. After going a long way in dozens of centuries, forging became a versatile and skillful way to make a strong and durable piece of furniture, which is also a real decoration of the modern interior for the bedroom.
Even such solid and impressive pieces of furniture as double beds can look airy, weightless, thanks to the masterful execution of forged parts. The diversity of forging capabilities allows finding a suitable bed model for various interior styles – from classic to modern.
Rustic interior or country style successfully integrates forged furniture. A bed made of metal and painted white will look harmoniously in the Provence style, and in a room decorated in the Shabby-chic style.
Classic bed made of solid wood always in trend
No matter how much time would pass, whatever new material would appear for the manufacture of furniture, solid wood remains popular and one of the most reliable materials. A bed made of solid wood is a jewel of the room by itself, and if an appropriate entourage is selected, the bedroom becomes a cult place in the house.
A classic interior is difficult to imagine without a massive bed made of wood with carved legs and headboard, decorated with carvings. The central object of the bedroom furniture made from solid wood is an environmentally friendly and harmonious decoration for your interior, which can also become an excellent investment for years to come.
A bed made of wood can become a focal center not only in a classic bedroom. Wooden products without excessive decorations are very successfully integrated into the modern interior.
Typically, a bed made of wood is not painted but covered with protective varnishes to demonstrate the natural shade of the natural material. But there are models of beds, made of wood and painted in bright colors. This colorful painting of a sleeping place makes it a focal center of the bedroom, allows to fully seize the attention of anyone entering the room.
A four poster bed – forgotten traditions in a modern interior
In ancient times, a canopy was invented as a means of keeping warm – it was made of a strong fabric and in most cases had a thick lining. The canopy was attached to four rails, which could be made of wood or metal. Nowadays canopy performs a more decorative role, it is made of thin, airy fabric, usually lace textiles.
By configuration, beds with canopy application can be with rails, which are attached to the frame of the bed and in one piece structure of the sleeping place on the platform or base to which the rails supporting the canopy are mounted.
In a modern interior ideas of a bedroom, a bed model with rails for the installation of a canopy in the absence of the latter can be used harmoniously. Tall columns designed to support the textile may be just a part of the décor of the bed, its design features.
Suspended beds – a new word in the design of bedrooms
Fashion for suspended beds came to us from the Asian island countries, where such pieces of furniture are an ordinary entourage of bungalows and villas by the ocean, designed for relaxation. In warm countries, suspended beds can be installed on an open terrace or under a canopy for relaxation in the fresh air. In fact, even the slightest movement of the bed results in a light rhythmic rocking which is able to lull even the people with insomnia.
Suspended beds can be both double and single, rectangular and round, with borders and without them. The most common are massive rectangular bases with high a mattress placed on it. The base of the bed is attached with four chains or thick jute ropes to the ceiling (using anchors). The bed is installed, or rather is suspended in the middle of the room, or close to one of the walls, but not too close (you need to leave a reserve of distance to the walls and other furniture for rocking).
In some interiors, imitation of a suspended bed is used. In reality, the product actually stands on the legs, which are hidden inside, and therefore it seems that the bed is hanging in the air. Some models are attached to a wall with one side, while its other side is suspended from the ceiling. Installation of any suspended bed model (except imitation) needs serious calculations – not every ceiling is able to support the weight of a bed with people or one person lying on it.
Beds with an edge at the base
Such models are very convenient in terms of the proper operation of the sleeping place. By sitting down on a solid edge of your bed base, you save the mattress from constant local loads (that inevitably arise when you sit on a mattress) and prolong its service life. Considering that orthopedic mattresses are often more expensive than the bed itself, this aspect could become a key consideration when choosing the model bed.
A few original ways of bed headboard decoration
Even if your bed is the simplest model, you can make an accent on the central and most important piece of furniture in the room for sleep and rest using a creative approach to the headboard design. For example, multiple design options for bed headboard can be realized with the help of textiles – from soft wall to lambrequins made of fabric, used for the decoration of window openings.
A bedroom in the country or ethnic styles can be decorated with a headboard made of virtually untreated wood. Chipped boards or logs with wormholes give the room certain brutality, even primitive rusticality.
Semi-aged painted wooden headboard can also bring an element of surprise to the interior of the bedroom and make it more unique, personalized.
A colorful mural or picturesque artwork is able to draw attention to the bed area and diversify color palette of the bedroom.
Tree branches, trunks, bark and more are used by modern designers to translate their thoughts and fantasies into bed decorations. There is no need to worry about the originality of your bed, and the entire interior, if you purchase a designer bed model decorated with a special, individual style.
In fact, very practical decoration elements – open shelves, small racks and niches for storage, can be used to decorate the bed headboard space, lights and wall lights can be used not only as a part of the lighting system but also as decorations or art objects.
And finally, some practical tips for choosing a bed in accordance with its size:
- if you are purchasing a bed in the finished interior of the bedroom, then measure the space area which is allocated for it precisely;
- if the price tag or packaging of the bed indicates that the size is “standard” – ask the consultant about its parameters;
- it is better to see the size of the product for yourself, price lists often indicate sleeping place size only, not the bed size;
- choose the largest size that your bedroom can accommodate (standard sizes of double beds – 160, 180 and 200 cm);
- considering options for bed sizes, do not forget about the length – a length exceeding the height of the individual who will be sleeping in the bed by 15 cm is considered ideal and sufficient;
- bed height above the floor is also very important, ideally, the bed mattress should be at knee height of the person standing nearby (the latest trends in bed fashion tend to the use of lower models, but they are not suitable for elderly people – the older the person, the higher their bed place).
