In today’s market there is a huge variety of different coffee table designs, so there should be no problem with choosing. However, they have something in common that unites them.
What kind of a coffee table to choose?
The answer to this question depends primarily on the function it has to perform. Accordingly, its location will be determined. Typically, coffee tables can be placed in living rooms and in bedrooms, in children’s rooms, basically, in any room, especially if you make it a center of the whole composition or a finishing touch in the interior. To date, the most popular and fashionable tables are considered those in “Italian” style with curved legs and interesting carvings and inlaid tabletop. Although, again, it still depends on the style, in which the interior is made. As these tables are luxury items and don’t fit in any interior.
Varieties of coffee table design depending on the style
For each specific interior a particular coffee table model is chosen in accordance with the style in which the room is decorated.
A very effective technique used by decorators is based on the principle of pairing. It can be lamps, rugs and vases, placed near each other, and coffee tables. At the same time, they must be from the same collection, or look exactly the same. This technique facilitates a quick change of an interior, as well as convenience, especially interior in the small living room (tables can be pushed back to back to form a large surface area for receiving guests), and spectacular appearance.
And rooms with large areas can have more of these tables.
Low tables came to us from the Japanese style and have a height, much less than the traditional ones (15 – 30 cm). These tables have a fairly concise form and clear corners. Also, they may not have legs at all, but if they do, they are straight. Also, the tables may feature an interesting texture (leather or wood), though very reserved in regard to color. They are in perfect harmony with any contemporary style valuing sustainability and minimalism.
There are coffee tables in the form of chests, and in some cases, the role of these tables is played by the chests themselves, which creates comfort in terms of storage space within them for books, magazines, as well as for small dishes – anything you want. And you can use such a chest as a home bar – which is also an option. There is an opinion that this coffee table can decorate any living room, no matter what style was used (for example, the Swedes think so). However, we still consider that such a table design is most suitable for such styles as country or classic. Also you can use handmade coffe tables.
A banquette can also serve as a coffee table if it is equipped with a sufficient volume of the horizontal flat surface. Convenience is in that one thing can carry two functions – that of a table, and a banquette. Moreover, the forms may be quite different, rectangular or round.
For a classic interior, of course, the ideal option would be a wooden table, which can have different designs: it can be a functional unit with a section, it may resemble an unusual bench, and might look just like a big tree stump.
But if you prefer traditional forms, you should decide in favor of models with a rectangular or oval top, equipped with four legs, pedestal base or plinth.
Materials from which coffee tables are made
The most common classic version is a coffee table made of wood, which can have stone decor. However, other types of combined materials, for example, glass and wood or glass and metal – the most harmonious combinations – are no less interesting. Or pure glass models – a very effective option suitable for any style of interior design. In addition, these tables do not overload the space, look absolutely light and airy, almost weightless. Tempered glass is used for their manufacture, crashworthy and capable of withstanding heavy loads.
Material from which the coffee table is made also depends primarily on the style. Generally, countertops can be made of a variety of materials such as natural wood or semiprecious stones (expensive models), or from a simple plastic, chipboard, MDF, veneer, glass, metal, etc. (cheaper options). In addition, tables can be made from any single material or a combination of two types or more. A coffee table made of natural wood and natural stone, is durable, though expensive. It will perfectly fit into the classic, country, or even retro interiors.
In addition, there are very comfortable models of coffee tables, equipped with wheels – ideal in cases where you want to move the table to a different room.
Glass countertops, perhaps, are the most favorite among designers. Especially if unexpected things are used as the base support of such tables: antlers, wooden bears, bronze dolphins or bizarre plants.
Moreover, tables with glass tops are very versatile, it should be recognized, and therefore look great in almost any interior.
