Arabic interior is one of the directions of Oriental interior arrangement which presupposes luxury, elegance, fairy-tale. Like all Oriental arts, it has three bases. This is clear adherence to the rules determined by Islam, following the ancient traditions and hand-made interior and décor items. Arabic design of the interior is an expression of the lifestyle.
The essential factor in the Oriental style is not luxury itself but the artists’ ability to create its appearance. With the help of their talent they decorated the rooms so that the impression of the owner’s richness exceeded its real size.
The main book of Arabs, Koran, prohibits illustrating everything live, i.e. created by the Creator. Therefore, there is no pictorial art and sculpture in Arabic interior. The artists express themselves through manifold and sophisticated patterns. This is predominantly geometrical pattern embraced by some unreal vegetation. These paintings are characterized by abundance in small elements and their detailed representation.
The arabesques from Koran texts are reproduced through the creation of original pattern out of words and letters. Texts may interweave with the ornament which requires even more skillfulness. The paintings background color is intense. Most frequently this is read, raspberry, emerald, turquoise, green and blue.
If possible, all the surface of walls and ceiling are covered with patterns. As well as columns, furniture, carpets, pillows. There are almost no empty monotonic places left in the Arabic interiors.
The ancestors’ traditions
The Arabic tribes led a nomadic life. In the interior this may be expressed through the improvised tent, carpets, covering the floor and multiple cushions and pillows of different types and colors.
The curtains should be bright with the Oriental ornament. They abound in cloth which is bunched up and tied with the cord, forming a lancet arch. The upper part of a wide window aperture may be decorated with lambrequins.
In the bedrooms above the bed, the canopy may be hanged in the form of tent made of silk or heavy dense texture of green, turquoise or vinous color with the finishing in the form of a gilded pattern. In the sitting room it may be formed above the sofa or ottoman.
The Arabic interior is full of the hand-made items. These are first of all carpets. The cost of some of them, especially silk ones is tens of thousands dollars. The craftswomen knot by knot reproduced the artist’s painting, changing the threads and creating their masterpieces. The whole floor, walls, even sofas and ottomans were covered with the carpets in the interior.
The Arabic mosaic made of wood is popular throughout the world. The pieces of wood of regular geometric shape were cut very thoroughly, and out of them the pattern was formed which covers the parts of the wall, column or decorates the furniture. The foundation, most frequently, was dark, or some other traditional color. The ornament itself was covered with pearl.
The incrustation may be seen everywhere. It may include gold, bronze, elephant ivory, pearl. The deepening was usually filled with the blue paint.
Creation of Arabic style in the modern apartments
To create the Oriental moods it is not necessarily to rearrange the whole interior. You may add just some main elements characteristic of the Arabic houses. These are the lancet arches, carpets, cushions, lighting. But let us consider all elements characteristic of this style
In the apartment it is recommended to arrange just one room in the Arabic style. You should start from the flooring. In the East the stone flooring was the salvation from heat. You should arrange the under-the-floor heating during the cold seasons. Therefore, you may just cover the whole surface of the wooden flooring with the carpet or several carpets of different size. Everything depends upon the room size.
The walls should be covered with the cloth containing the oriental patterns. Preferably, use the dark red, blue, and green shades. The most suitable is the pattern of gold or yellow color. As an option, you may use the painting. Apply the Arabic pattern in a light color on the dark background. The diversity of the wallpapers at the stores allows choosing the corresponding pattern and just glue them. But remember, the wallpapers should be glued end-to-end.
The carpets on the walls will also be suitable. The woolen or semi-woolen items with the appropriate pattern and background of dark shades of red should be preferable. Such carpets are affordable and will help you to create the Oriental atmosphere.
The Arabic style is characterized by the lancet arches and columns. This will help you also in zoning of a large room. If the premises are small, you may just create the semi-columns or figured niches near the windows or side walls.
The high ceiling may be decorated with beams and paintings. The lower one – with the wallpapers containing the fine light geometric pattern or just plastered without application of finishing plaster giving the smoothness. In the Arabic interior texture is very essential.
If you arrange your room Arabic, take away all the chairs and stools, as well as large wardrobes and dinner tables of standard height. These items are inorganic at the Oriental interiors.
There isn’t much furniture in the Oriental style. These are, predominantly, large sofas and ottomans with multiple diverse cushions. The tables are low, unusual by shapes, made of wood and decorated with incrustation. They are often similar to the large trays. It is traditional to use cushions to sit at such table.
If there are some wardrobes, they are light, azure. Most frequently, to store your stuff, use the wall niches, closed with the wooden doors with the carved patterns.
The Arabic style abounds in lamps diverse in shape. The main condition is lighting – soft, yellowish, not bright, even dim. In the sitting room with the high ceilings the beaten chandelier should dominate. Or you may place a bunch of lamps with the azure bronze-coined dome lamps. A row of small wall lamps will find its place on the walls.
Windows and doors
The Arabic palaces are characterized by the narrow lancet windows. In the ready-made modern house, you may just place a figured niche in front of a large window or hang the curtains everywhere having arranged the window like entrance into the tent.
Most often there is no door. The apertures are hanged with the carpets or heavy curtains with beautiful patterns. You may make a carved wooden door.
They are very diverse. These are practically all items which came to us from East. They often include the hookah, beaten bird cages, chess, high-necked bronze-coined pitchers. Painted vases and pitchers of different sizes. Large coined and carved platters and bowls.
For creative personalities
If you wish to create something hand-made, you will have much space for this in the Arabic style. The simplest is creating a lot of cushions, appropriate in color, pattern, texture. They may be finished with lacing.
Turn the window into something similar to the tent. You may create the lambrequins or finishing, gather the curtains in a beautiful manner, have chosen all matching tissues, but do not forget about cords. The top of the canopy above the bed or sofa may be fixed to the ceiling.
You may create a lancet arch having cut the basis out of the gypsum board, cover with a thin layer of plaster and paint. You may create the azure doors for the wardrobe or partition out of the plywood with the help of lock saw.
As to the paintings, the sky is the limit for your imagination. Just follow some rules. First of all paint the geometric pattern, then decorate it with the vegetation ornament, clearly reproducing all the details. Do not copy the live plants but create your own ones.
