Probably the first kitchen in minimalist style was arranged in the cave, where there was nothing around the fire except for the rubble stones scattered around and acting as the seats for hunters deserving a hearty dinner.
It is incredible but minimalism in the interior design became extremely popular. Straight, simple geometric forms, based on the exact engineering calculations, domination of achromatic colors with the expressive bright accents (in the form of splash-back coloring, dishes, décor elements cut to a minimum) or a subtle monochromic variant, small amount of components, big amount of free space, fill the premises with elegance and modernity. The minimalism style is relevant both for the small premises and for the large areas
The square meters and premise configuration determine the furniture placement technique. In the small kitchen, one wall is filled with the arrangement items, the window wall is left free
If there is a premise in the form of a pocket with window, located in the sidewall, the minimalist furniture shall be placed along the two walls, then the central part of the kitchen is free and may be easily passed.
In the L-shaped kitchen, there are more options of outlining the separate zones for cooking and taking the food.
In the spacious premise most frequently of rectangular form, the U-shaped furniture and equipment placement is used (along 3 walls). The access to all interior elements is free.
The working complexes of the island type are immensely popular in the large areas. The pedestal table is located in the center of the room with the stove and sink integrated into the working surface. Very often quite large wardrobes for the dishes storage and cutlery are built into the table as well as the kitchen equipment and the water pipe. The island is also used for separating the area.
The compact modification of “island” is the “half-island” planning in which the end part is joined with the wall. Many designers of interior became the followers of minimalism tendency, which resulted in the interesting projects, attractive from the esthetic point of view and very functional. All interior elements are unified into one according to the formula “everything is a part of everything”, their redundancy and repetitiveness are excluded.
Main advantages of the style are space, order and cleanness – the dream of every housewife. The new materials started being used, such as glass, acryl, plastic, wood laminate and MDF, steel and aluminum, which fit well the traditional natural wood, which is now given a supportive, often decorative role.
Modern finishing materials possessing the antibacterial properties, simple to clean, made the cleanness and good order a cult.
Modern kitchen with the closed facades has many surprises. It has even become incredibly smart, sometimes it seems that it can be telepathically controlled. In the minimalist kitchen where each unnecessary item violates the styling purity, the doors of the cupboard and ceiling are deprived of such common accessories as handles. The noiseless opening (closing) technology of doors with a simple pressing (palm or knee, if your hands are busy), actuation of such pull-out mechanisms was given the name according to the developing brand – Blum.
When choosing the chairs, the use of natural wood, metal, acryl and polypropylene is preferable.
Function and design – this determine the kitchen equipment choice. Surely, the idea of having a stove and fridge only will be suitable just for some unsociable single apartment resident, but a housewife will also need a dishwasher, oven, microwave and extract ventilation. All this is necessary for a comfortable life, the equipment is built into the furniture and is placed according to certain principles, of which the free access and “everything in hand” are main. Key objects of the working area the cooking panel, sink (in the middle) and fridge are usually located side by side.
The extract ventilation essentially simplified the cleaning of the kitchen, taking upon themselves the mudded evaporations, grease, smoke, unpleasant odors. Usually, they are located above the cooking panel, matching by its size the working surface of the extract ventilation. This is the direct function. But there is a decorative function as well. The design of modern extract ventilations is so diverse that you may choose from the following:
- domical (very stylish and powerful, suitable for the large kitchens),
- inbuilt (built into the hanging cupboard, only the control panel and filter grating remain visible),
- flat (very compact as they are not connected to the air pits, are mantled on the wall above the stove or lower cupboard surface),
- the island (fixed to the ceiling in any place of the kitchen above the stove)
- L-shaped (made of glass, stainless metal, fixed to the wall or ceiling, enriches the interior, making it complete).
In arrangement of minimalist kitchen big role is given to the illumination design, the system of which includes:
- Ceiling lamps for general space illumination, where the whole kitchen may be flooded with light;
- Spotlighting for the directed illumination of necessary part of the kitchen or object (modern systems allow adjusting the illumination brightness) – working and table area (with the dining table or breakfast bar);
- Decorative illumination.
To sum up, the method of kitchen arrangement using the minimalism techniques is suitable for the disciplined persons who do not stand the stylistic, item, and color cacophony, who appreciate and are able to maintain:
- structural and functional purism;
- precise furniture placement;
- compactness and synthesis;
- an absence of redundancy;
- clean and tidy premises.
