The living room is a heart of the house and every owner tries to organize this room in such a way, that it will be both comfortable, harmonious, and impressive-looking, fascinating.
Coffee Table History
This furniture item was born in 1868. It is commonly believed, that his father is European designer Edward William Godwin. To tell the truth, initially the table for the living room was about 70 cm in height and later it acquired habitual form. However, precisely this man initiated the development of such an interesting, and most importantly, a functional attribute of modern living room. And, although, it is not unanimous, wherefrom the idea to create an occasional table was borrowed, whether from the Turkish Empire culture, or from the Japanese culture, so popular in those times in Europe, that is just the point: nowadays the popularity of coffee tables is so great, that you can see this piece of furniture in every house.
Different Types of Tables
Since the advent of innovative technologies, a range of materials for manufacturing coffee tables was increased. Moreover, its variety allowed making this piece of furniture available for any segment of a population. At the same time, designers’ ideas in relation to coffee table developed very quickly. Elementary table with carved legs or glass top is already old hat. But the idea of the construction design sometimes strikes. Thus, all coffee tables can be divided into three groups:
The second group is coffee-tables-transformers. The construction design of such a table allows a subtle movement of the hand transforming it into the ottoman, into several individual tables, or banquette with upholstered seat. The pink of fashion of these transformers is a table, which can be easily transformed from the low coffee table into a big dining table for family and guests.
The third group is decorative tables, which are rarely used for the intended purpose and are only decorative elements. As a rule, such tables have not only fancy design, but they are made of unusual material.
How to Choose Coffee Table?
What the principles people are usually guided, when choosing furniture? Many people will agree, that very often they make such a purchase on the principle “I came, I saw, I conquered”. However, it is hardly right. Even for such a small detail of interior as a unusual coffee table, this is entirely wrong. First of all, when choosing this furniture item, you should take the following into consideration:
- living room style;
- color scheme, even if it is a bright color accent of an interior, it has to blend with the colors used in the room and match the interior design;
- premises square area and immediately a place for table location, especially, when it is referred to small living room in the apartment.
Some Practical Suggestions
A rule of thumb states, that fastest-selling tables are still coffee tables made of wood. And this phenomenon has a quite reasonable explanation: this material is easily fit in any style, suitable for any color scheme and ideal for easy care. Moreover, if you choose a table made of wood of warm shades for the room with a cold classic combination of black and white, the interior will be filled with coziness and warmth and will not lose its severity.
However, to make the coffee table, you like, suitable for your living room, it is not obligatory to lay floor coating of the proper color, or to have recourse to drastic measures. It is enough to put on sofa or armchair a few cushions of the same shade or to put a small armchair with the upholstery of the similar color as the tabletop.
If you are going to have some curio cabinets or bookcases in the living room, it will be better, if a coffee table is made of the same material as other pieces of furniture.
One more popular material for coffee table tabletop is glass, the legs of which can be made of various material. However, when choosing table made of glass, be ready to dust it off all the time, though this disadvantage is compensated by its appearance since such a table even of big size will not encumber the room due to its transparency.
No matter how you slice it, the coffee table is always in a focus of attention in the living room, since precisely main pieces of furniture such as sofa, armchairs, and ottomans are around it. This is precisely, why you should take seriously the choice of this important attribute of the living room, having everything figured out: beginning with the purpose of this furniture item, more specifically, if it is only a decorative component or it is used for the intended purpose, or it is a place for vase with flowers or for magazines and notebooks, and ending with the material it is made of.
Finally, it should be noted, that exactly the preferences of the owner shall be essential, since, in particular, he has to like his living room, and love for an own home will fill him with positive energy that any guest will feel, for sure.
