The royal and luxurious baroque style (the style of kings and noblemen) used for the arrangement of the interior, serves as the sign of richness, prestige and spatial swing of the house owners as it reflects the epoch of 17-18 century. This is the time when it was born in Italy: Roma, Venice, Florence and Mantua, during the epoch of triumphal blooming of the Western civilization. It is characterized by luxury, nobility, bravery, dynamism of images. Baroque is characterized by the application of the deflected and architectural forms, for instance, the presence of columns in the interior style. The decorations are sophisticated and flexible in shape, and with the help of twisted ornaments the feeling of eminence and volume is created. The gold, copper, silver, marble, valuable species of trees and ivory are actively used.
The style peculiarities
It should be noted that this style welcomes spacious, especially oval premises, giving the possibility to create, for instance, elegant halls or bedrooms. The baroque style will be inappropriate for the small premises, since it presupposes large and fundamental furniture, which may easily be placed within the space, without reducing it and the feeling of space, and what is most important – its royalty. However, if you wish, you may use just some elements of the style and confine yourself to some inessential specialty.
As an additional décor the baroque style most frequently uses the niches in the walls. Usually, they are filled with vases, statuettes and other figurines. Large mirrors, chinaware, mother-of-pearl, precious metals and different ivory items would look very appropriate here.
Apart from everything else, this style presupposes rich arrangement of windows and doors. The door should imitate the palace door, i.e. the double-swing door will be just ideal. They should be painted either the color of walls or just have a white color, the insertions of colorful glass or textile are allowed. The door decoration may be different, for instance, with carving or gilded elements. The cushions with the hand-made embroidery or even carved furniture made on your own will be relevant – there is pretty much freedom for the creative imagination.
The walls finishing in the baroque style
The main rule is that the walls should not be completely homogeneous. It is necessary to provide for diverse insertions, trimmings, architectural décor or plasterwork. The following materials may be used: plasterwork, textile wallpapers, wooden panels (painted), and even better – panels of natural redwood. And if you use the tapestry and gold-cloth, the feeling of luxury will be even stronger. The pictorial arts and sculptures were widely used when arranging the baroque walls. The pictures of the Renaissance epoch on the walls will look very successful. The use of columns, pilasters and different plasterwork was practiced – everything which may underline the decoration luxury
Real baroque style presupposes the ceiling which is the continuation of the wall and in no case contrasts with it. The décor in the form of gilding and plasterwork is also appropriate on the ceiling, both on the smooth and on the arched. Moreover, it will give the premises maximum royalty and solemnity. And the ceiling decorated with frescos is just an ideal solution to convey the peculiarities of this epoch to the fullest extent. In modern variant instead of frescos the stretched ceiling print may be used.
First of all, the color of the floor should match the remaining finishing. As to the materials used – this may be ceramics or wood. The artificial parquet made of the expensive species of wood is acceptable. By the way, the carpets on the floor, especially painted ones, will be an appropriate complement, if they occupy the smaller part of the floor surface. The baroque style presupposes the use of palaces. They were also used on the walls of the house. Later they were called tapestry.
The baroque furniture
The characteristic features of furniture in the baroque style are as follows: bright covering of the rich cloth, fringe and different sophisticated elements, carved legs, lacquer and surfaces covered with gold. The backs of sofas and chairs should be bent and have the form of the wavelike line. The constructions of the sofas should imitate the chairs gathered together. The table top is decorated with mosaic, colorful marble or mother-of-pearl, and in most cases is round, the chairs are equipped with the carved backs. Key elements of the furniture of this style are chests, double-swing wardrobes, stands, cupboards-buffets, large dining table, chairs with the high backs, ottomans, etc.
The bed should imitate the Oriental tents with the abundance of curtains and drapery. The furniture color in most cases should be identical to the walls finishing. Apart from the bed, the furniture in the room may be represented by the coffee table, chest with drawers, hassocks and console-mirror.
Textile in Baroque style
Textile should give the feeling of richness and luxury. And this effect should be achieved with the use of exuberant drapery, golden fringe, suspensions and trusses. The curtains may be made of the velveting, cloth of gold, atlas or silk, embroidered with the golden thread or lurex. The presence of the luxurious lambrequin especially ornamented with the wonderful rich embroidery and application is quite preferable. Formerly the curtains in the baroque style were made of the backup materials of contrast colors. Besides, the door apertures were decorated with the same draped cloth as on the windows. Nowadays the cloth imitating natural materials such as onyx, marble, malachite, tortoiseshell, etc. is used, in other words, the heavy, expensive textile.
The baroque style presupposes the large windows in the premises, the light should be bright enough.
Besides, the large mirrors are widely used, giving the effect of even brighter illumination and visually extending the space, which is the key factor for this style. At night hours the candles framed into beautiful candlesticks of silver or carved wood were widely used. Nowadays, the role of candles is perfectly performed by the ready-made lamps in the form of candles.
Besides, the baroque style admits using the crystal massive chandeliers. Besides, the sparkling wall lamps are used (it would be perfect if this will be crystal gilded wall lamps) and beautiful floor lamps with the carved legs.
